New Outskirts Author's Children's Book a Real Quack-Up

Denver, CO and Sinking Spring, PA (PRWEB) January 29, 2008 -- The latest book from children's author Ryke Leigh Douglas shows what happens when two boys try to keep a non-domesticated animal as a pet and end up hatching a whole lot of mayhem--in addition to one very messy goose.

Just launched by Outskirts Press, the full-color "Sam's Surprise," beautifully illustrated by renowned children's book artist Kevin Collier, is now available through the author's Web site at www.outskirtspress.com/Sam'sSurprise. The book introduces readers to best friends Alex and Luke, who one day stumble upon what they think is an abandoned duck egg. But for Alex, the discovery means one thing: A new pet, assuming he can hatch it. His mom thinks he's gone quackers, but Alex proves her wrong when his feathered friend pokes out of the shell.

Soon enough, the new arrival is wreaking havoc in Alex's room, around the house, even in the backyard. Overturned plants, broken furniture and incessant honking make it clear this isn't your ordinary house pet. As the bird grows, Alex and Luke wrestle with what to do with their charge, who's too unruly to live at home, but not quite wild enough to exist on its own. Can they find a way to help the goose learn to fly and join a flock--all before school starts in August?

With a silly goose at its center and a theme of responsibility, "Sam's Surprise" is sure to appeal to parents, teachers and children alike. What's more, adults can use the book to generate discussion about animals, their care and the work that go along with owning a pet--one of the most important formative experiences a child can have. But kids will most likely get lost in the boys' travails and detailed, brightly colored world of two boys and their friendly honker.

Breastfeeding Your Toddler
Think that when you deliver your baby, the hard part will be over? Once the baby is born, the new challenge that presents itself is raising the infant. Breastfeeding can begin within moments of giving birth as long as there are no problems with the baby and the mother. Breastfeeding should be continued for at least the first 6 months of the baby's life, but can continue for up to one year, or until such time as your pediatrician feels the baby can handle other liquids.

Choosing A Plush Toy For A Toddler
Most toddlers go nuts over plush toys. When my brother was three, he went everywhere with what looked to me like an over-weight cat a missing eye. It went with him to the backyard; it was with him watching his favorite shows on TV; it accompanied us for meals at the dining table; and finally cuddled up with his toddler owner to sleep. I think it was my brother's security blanket -- a friend for all seasons. So when I had to pick up a gift for my best friend's two year old daughter's second birthday, it was a no-brainer. I would get her a plush toy!

Knowing The Right Time To Toilet Train Your Toddler
Girls are usually easier than boys to toilet train. With all the boys and girls I have ever known, this has been the case. I don?t think there is any research that actually explains why this is the case. It is also reported that fewer girls wet the bed. Actually and this is absolute truth, my daughter just one day started sitting on the potty chair and potty training was over for the both of us. She continued to use that potty chair until she was able to use the bathroom.
